The Thirsty Horse of Mongolia “The Thirsty Horse of Mongolia” was indeed a horse. Born on the open steppe of Mongolia, he was blessed with an enquiring mind and an adventurous spirit, which spurred him to set out on a lone journey to discover the end of the world. Soon in his journey he met a magic spirit that turned him into a boy and set him upon a different task - to discover the secret of life. Thirsty Horse is a sincere and simple character with the courage to dream. Taking advice that the first thing he needed in order to pursue his quest was a good education, he enrolled in a village school and learned all that he could. Finding that his education could not answer his question but yet gave him the means to discover it, he concluded empirically that the greatest value of any education system is not in the knowledge that it gives but in the process of thought that it imparts and which leads to that knowledge, and that the moral duty of each and every one of us is to live by the truth as he finds it to be. Now when Thirsty Horse first left his home he was chased by a pack of wolves and narrowly escaped with his life. After becoming a boy he again camped on the open steppe, and he heard the wolves howling in the distance but they dared not come close. So he thought about this for a while as he sat by his fire, and he looked up at the stars, and then these words came to him, “Imagination to be inspired. Ingenuity to achieve and enough strength to achieve it with. Courage to dare. Memory to build upon and intelligence to bind it all into one; and compassion for all the world. These are the gifts of the stars to men, for each of us to use for a moment to the best accomplishment that he can; thereby to find his destiny, and himself.” |
